The Cooley Peninsula, designated a "Special Area of Conservation" (SAC) is a natural history and landscape photographer's haven. 

The mountains and hills dominate the area with rivers, peatlands, woods and forestry plantations while the shores of Carlingford lough and the Irish Sea border the Cooley Peninsula on three sides providing the perfect stop over point for migratory birds from Siberia & the Artic Circle. 

The varied habitats provide the perfect ecosystems that are home to almost all of the wild mammal species of Ireland including the rare Pine Marten and Red Squirrel, Ireland's largest wild mammal the Red Deer can be seen in Ravensdale. Native mammals include Fox, Badger, Stoat, Irish Mountain Hare, Pine Marten, Otter and Red Squirrel. While some of the noteworthy birds include Buzzard, Jay, Cuckoo, Long Eared Owl, Woodcock, Raven, Merlin, Peregrine Falcon and Crossbill.

During the winter many migrant birds arrive to escape the harsh weather further north. Expect to see Brambling, Twite, Fieldfare, Redwing, Whooper Swan, Pale Bellied Brent Geese, Snow Bunting, Waxwing and many more.

Notable butterflies and moths include Emperor Moth, Fox Moth, Elephant Hawkmoth, Poplar Hawkmoth, Green Hairstreak, Small Copper, Wall Brown, Silver Washed Fritillary, Dark Green Fritillary, Holly Blue and Small Heath.

Notable damsel and dragonflies include Keeled Skimmer, Common Hawker, Black Darter, Emerald Damselfly, Four Spotted Chaser and Emperor Dragonfly.
